Introduction

Women Who Inspire is organised to celebrate the vision of International Women’s Day and is the brainchild of Dr. Cathy Ryan MBE. Celebrating women’s achievements throughout history and across nations. Many women have achieved great things, but there are still those who are struggling and face great difficulties and challenges in their lives. Women can be a driving force to help support those women who are still fighting for their independence and their rights. Our first Women Who Inspire supper brought together women who shared stories of how they have used their passion and determination to inspire change, motivate, and encourage others to succeed; to go forward to fight for their rights, justice, independence, or self-worth as an equal. The 2025 event promises to be equally inspirational to help make a difference to the plight of women locally, nationally, and internationally.

Speakers

Angela Williams

Originally from Margate in Kent and now living in the area of Chester. I am a member of both Inner Wheel and Rotary and have held various roles in both organisations. The most recent for Inner Wheel being the Association Editor for GB&I and an Assistant Governor for Rotary in D1180. In May 2019 I was a Champion of Change winner and in Nov 2019 I received a PHF.

I became Ambassador of Sightbox Trust back in 2016 when the charity first started and have worked hard to get the charity to where it is now. With the charity I have been recognised by RNIB and spoken in the Houses of Parliament.

Sightbox Trust is a charity providing education through sport for the blind and visually impaired in the developing world. Something so simple can really make a difference in changing lives as the impossible becomes possible.

Dr. Jane E Miller OBE

Janee was born in Russia in the Cold War and she and her brother were nicknamed the Red Star twins. She lived there until she was almost  seven before the family moved to South Africa which is where she was bitten by the Africa bug.

Many years later she returned to the Gambia to carry out studies into treating nets with insecticide for malaria control for her PhD which she received from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Janee has worked in a number of African and Asian countries to assist in the programme design management of the scale up of the use of ITN’s. She has assisted in market shaping efforts to increase access to diagnostic tests and treatment of malaria.  She has experience of working in challenging operating environments such as South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  She has been a member of the Global Fund technical review panel and several WHO advisory groups. Janee lived in East Africa for over 20 years and is now based back in the UK in Southwold, Suffolk.

In 2010 Janee was awarded an OBE for her services to Malaria control.

Janee has recently given up full time employment in order to concentrate on writing. This year she fundraised with a group of friends to get 8 ambulances full of medical equipment to the Ukraine and she drove one of them to Lviv in June. She is a Southwold Town Councillor and a keen all year round sea swimmer.
